Free naloxone kits available in Haliburton

A medication that can help save lives is available in the Village of Haliburton for free.

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit wants the public to know naloxone kits and training on how to use them can be found at local pharmacies.

The health unit says naloxone is an emergency medicine that temporarily reduces the effects of an opioid overdose so the victim can make it to the hospital for treatment.

Opioids are prescription painkillers that H.K.P.R. says can become highly addictive and some bootleg opioids, like fentanyl, are being sold illegally.

The Health Unit is using International Overdose Awareness Day, which is tomorrow, to bring awareness to the danger caused by opioid overdose.
