Algonquin Highlands discovers old Stanhope playground was on top of library’s septic system, looking to replace 40-year-old system

Algonquin Highlands will be replacing a septic system that was under the old playground in Stanhope.

Council learned that recently while staff members were preparing the park for a new playground, they found a surprise.

In his report to council, Parks, Recreation and Trails Manager Chris Card recommended the township either move the playground, or replace the septic system and install it in a different area.

If the playground were to be moved, 10 trees would have to be cut down and Mayor Carol Moffatt says council had no interest in that.

The report says the septic system, which is attached to the Stanhope Library has been there since the mid-1970’s.

The report also stated that putting in a new system could cost the township anywhere between $8,000-$12,000.
