Highlands East attracts many visitors for mineral collecting and geocaching

Highlands East has some information on what tourists are looking for when they visit.

According to municipal Community Economic Development and Committee Coordinator Joanne Vanier, the visitor information centre had over 200 visitors last month.

Of those visitors, 140 of them were tourists, and the majority was looking for info on mineral collection and geocaching.

Vanier says she found the numbers surprising.

Vanier says a group of students from a university in Michigan were in the area to collect minerals last month.

Highlands East is also referred to the Geocaching Capital of Canada.

Geocaching is using a website and G.P.S. device to find hidden items like a treasure hunt.

Vanier says tourists come from all over to go geocaching in Highlands East.

Vanier says last month, 93 visitors had mineral collection inquiries, while 52 people wanted to learn about geocaching.
