Laurie Scott’s private member’s bill receives unanimous support in Queen’s Park for second reading

Laurie Scott’s private member’s bill is closer to becoming law.

The Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, Brock M.P.P. introduced Bill 120 in Queen’s Park earlier this year, and it passed second reading last week.

The bill calls for mandatory sexual assault training for sitting judges and justices of the peace.

Scott says new judges are required to take the training but wanted to see a similar rule for judges already in the system.

She adds she is concerned with some of the comments some judges have made when presiding over sexual assault cases in courts across Canada.

The bill received unanimous support in the legislature.

Scott says she will be pressing the government to bring Bill 120 into law but doesn’t know when that will be.
