Highlands East amends bylaw to allow daytime burning, with a permit

If you live in Highlands East, you can burn during the day over the fire season.

There is a catch though; you must have a permit from the municipality to do so.

Council amended its burning bylaw because the original one didn’t allow daytime burning at all.

According to the bylaw, fire season is between April 1st and October 31st and the daytime ban runs from a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset.

Highlands East Bylaw Enforcement Officer Wayne Galloway says the minimum fine is 50 dollars.

He also says that can add up quickly if a fire spreads and you are deemed responsible.
