Scott feels not enough consultation done on Safer Ontario Act

Laurie Scott isn’t impressed with the province’s decision to hold back on public consultations.

The Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, Brock M.P.P. says she proposed to the Standing Committee on Justice Policy that it hold more public hearings on the Safer Ontario Act.

The act is an overhaul of the Ontario Police Services Act, which is the first since 1990.

Scott says she wanted to see more public consultations, especially in the north.

Scott’s colleague, Norm Miller, supported an extension as well as having sessions in Sudbury and Thunder Bay.

Miller is the Conservative Critic on Northern Affairs.

Scott says a major concern her party has is the definition of core functions of police officers is not clear.

She says the bill is over 400 pages and needs review before being rushed through committee meetings.
