Highlands East needs volunteers if it will continue maintaining its outdoor rinks in Gooderham and Cardiff.

The municipality realizes that many people enjoy having outdoor play spots, such as rinks and toboggan hills but is concerned about potential liability.

If someone hurts themselves on municipality maintained property, it could find itself in legal trouble.

In a letter to council, Highlands East Property Supervisor Jim Alden says that since the municipality doesn’t have the same amount of staff, or as big a volunteer base, as larger jurisdictions, maintaining winter playgrounds is challenging.

If someone wants to put their name forward to volunteer to inspect and maintain the outdoor arenas, they can call the municipal office at 705-448-2981.
