Algonquin Highlands maintaining status quo when it comes to electronic meetings and appointing alternates for county council

Algonquin Highlands decided against making changes now permitted under updated provincial legislation.

The Modernizing Ontario’s Municipal Legislation Act allows councillors to participate in meetings over the internet, as well as appoint an alternate for county council in case the mayor and deputy mayor cannot attend.

Mayor Carol Moffatt says the township will keep things as is when it comes to e-meetings and alternates at the county.

Moffatt feels if you are elected, you should be there in person.

Moffatt did say in some circumstances, it would be okay for an elected official to attend a meeting via skype.

She used the example of Highlands East Mayor Dave Burton attending meetings electronically when he was injured for three months last year.
