Haliburton County council approves 2018 budget, taxes are going up

Haliburton County residents will see a tax increase this year.

The increase will turn into an extra $5.15 per $100,000 of assessed property value.

The country needed to increase the rate to cover a 6.60 per cent shortfall in the levy.

Approximately half of the increase in the levy can be attributed to transportation services.

According to the second draft of the budget, the original tax hike would have been $5.09 per $100,000 of assessed value, but the county decided to add $100,000 to its general reserves.

The county is also spending $50,000 towards implementing a community transportation plan.
