Highlands East council to allow electronic participation

Highlands East could allow its politicians to participate in meetings electronically under certain circumstances.

According to a draft bylaw, members of council can attend using a program like skype if they are sick or injured.

The proposed bylaw would also allow politicians to participate electronically if they are out of town.

Councillor Joan Barton suggested the bylaw be updated to specify that the provision would apply to absences to due council duties.

Councillors would not be allowed to take part in a meeting electronically if they are on an extended leave of absence or on vacation

The draft bylaw also states that politicians must be in a cognitive and alert state to participate.

The bylaw could be passed at next month’s meeting.
