Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, Brock M.P. Jamie Schmale says Canada has a strong justice system.
Schmale was referring to a case in Saskatchewan where Gerald Stanley was found not guilty by a jury in the shooting death of 22-year-old First Nations Man Colten Boushie in 2016.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Saturday that we have come to this point as a country far too many times and that Indigenous people across the country are heartbroken over the verdict.
Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpot tweeted that more needs to be done to improve justice & fairness for Indigenous Canadians. –
Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould tweeted that we can, and must do better as a country.
Schmale says Canada’s justice system isn’t perfect but it’s a strong one.
Schamle says as a parent, his heart goes out to Boushie’s family.
Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer said that it’s appropriate to show support and concern for Boushie’s family, but that politicians don’t decide judicial outcomes.
Devastating news tonight for the family & friends of #ColtenBoushie. My thoughts & prayers are with you in your time of grief & pain. We all have more to do to improve justice & fairness for Indigenous Canadians.
