Fearrey says tools offered by Housing Corporation could be helpful

Murray Fearrey says adding more affordable housing to the municipality will be a challenge.

The Dysart et al Mayor was talking about a presentation from the Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton Housing Corporation last week.

The K.L.H. Corporation told Dysart council about various tools that could be offered to encourage people to build affordable homes or apartments.

Fearrey says a program from K.L.H. that offers homeowners $10,000 to put an addition on their property is the most viable option for the municipality.

While Fearrey said he would love to see an apartment building with affordable rents constructed, he says developers aren’t lining up to build.

According to the housing corporation, there are approximately 800 individuals and families on the waiting list for affordable housing in the county.
