Ducks Unlimited tackling Phragmites in Haliburton County

Environmental officials are biting back against an invasive species making its mark in the county.

Ducks Unlimited Canada, partnered with various other environmental groups, has spent the last two years testing a herbicide on the aggressive plant Phragmites. DUC Ontario official Erling Armson says the results have been quite positive.

He says there doesn’t appear to be any negative impacts on the surrounding environment where the herbicide has been used. Armson says they’ll test for another year before pushing for Health Canada to approve the product for sale on Canadian shelves.

Ducks Unlimited Canada is hoping to promote public awareness about Phragmites and it’s environmental impacts as part of Invasive Species Awareness Week in Canada.

Phragmites is a grass-like weed that has the ability to choke out various native wetland plants across Ontario. You can find more details on this eradication project and what you can do if you come across Phragmites in Haliburton County here.
