Algonquin Highlands will feel the effects of an increase to the minimum wage for landfill operations.

The township and Watsons Contracting agreed to extend their deal for landfill staffing until the end of the year.

Bill 148 increases the township’s costs under the deal by $2.34 an hour.

According to its budget, Algonquin Highlands will be spending a total of $595,484 on waste disposal this year, which is up from the nearly $519,000 spent in 2017.

Mayor Carol Moffatt says municipalities and businesses are adjusting to the increase in the minimum wage, which is now $14 an hour.
