Eighty eight per cent of businesses say Highlands East good, or excellent, place to do business; attracting qualified employees is the biggest challenge

Many Highlands East businesses say the municipality is a good, or excellent, place to do business.

That’s according to a Business Retention and Expansion report shown to council this week, which says 88 per cent of businesses surveyed are satisfied.

Forty-three entrepreneurs were interviewed as part of the report and 40 of them have been in business four years or longer.

The report goes onto say that 88 per cent of the businesses are locally owned and operated with the owner living in Highlands East.

Doing business in Highlands East does come with challenges.

According to the report, 59 per cent of businesses say they have difficulty attracting employees to the area with the right skill set.

To tackle that, the report suggests having an annual job fair as well as making trades skills training available locally.

The report concludes with a suggestion that another study be done in 2019.
