O.P.P. and Highlands East team up to bring background check clinic for volunteers to municipality

Highlands East will have more volunteers helping out around the community.

Many volunteer organizations, especially those working with children and seniors, require criminal background checks before someone joins them.

The Haliburton Highlands O.P.P. and the municipality teamed up to do free background checks for residents needing them.

The Haliburton Highlands detachment is in Minden Hills which is over an hour away by car or truck for some residents of Highlands East.

Detachment Commander Liane Spong says this was the first time officers came out to the municipality for the background checks.

Spong also says it’s very possible they will be back.

Spong adds the detachment is glad to help people who want to donate their time to worthy causes.

Mayor Dave Burton as well as Councillor Joan Barton were on hand to greet volunteers and walk them through the process.

Burton added that many residents approached him looking for background checks but didn’t want to take the drive to Minden so he reached out to the local detachment to bring the background check clinic to the area.
