Highlands East Mayor Dave Burton says $10,000 to help with pot legalization from the province is an insult

The mayor of Highlands East is giving a $10,000 cheque from the province two thumbs down. Municipalities across Ontario are receiving the money from the government to help councils deal with the expected rise in costs from marijuana legalization. The county’s four lower-tier governments are all receiving $10,000.

Burton says the amount of money is far from enough to cover rising costs pot legalization is expected to bring.

Burton says he expects nuisance complaints will rise and that the municipality may have to hire additional bylaw officers. Dysart et al Murray Fearrey and Minden Hills Mayor Brent Devolin both said $10,000 will not be enough.
