Humboldt Broncos tragedy has inspired locals to become organ donors

Every three days someone will die because they did not get their transplant in time. That’s according to the Trillium Gift of Life Network which is Ontario’s government agency responsible for organ and tissue donation and transplants.

April is considered ‘Be a Donor Month’, but Founder of the Muskoka Gift of Life Association, and liver transplant recipient, Sandra Holdsworth says because of the bus crash that killed 16 people in Saskatchewan last Friday, locals have been wondering how they can become donors. According to a statement released by the family of Humboldt Broncos’ defenceman Logan Boulet, the 21-year-old was taken off life-support and his organs were donated to six people in need. Holdsworth says the story of the young boy has created a ripple effect across Canada and right here in cottage country.

Holdsworth says as of today, Bracebridge has a higher percentage of donors compared to the city of Toronto.

If you’re interested in being a donor or want to check to make sure you’re registered, go to BeaDonor.ca.
