MNRF puts water safety statement in effect for parts of Haliburton

Muskoka, Parry Sound, and the north-west portion of Haliburton are all under a water safety statement. The statement means high flows, melting ice and other factors could be dangerous for anglers, boaters, and swimmers but flooding isn’t expected.

The Ministry of Natural Resources says those living in the area should keep a close watch on conditions, check updated messages, and be careful around waterways as flows and levels are expected to rise.

The MNRF says flooding isn’t expected at this time, but anyone with property in flood-prone areas may want to think about securing their house or cottage. The ministry also notes it’s expected low-lying portions of flood-prone roads along rivers will be impacted, as river levels are going to start to increase over the next week. If you’re using a forest access road for outdoor activities, the MNRF says to use extreme caution as many are seasonally inundated with water and prone to washouts. It says officials are keeping a close eye on the conditions and will continue to issue updates as necessary.

Around 20 to 25 mm of rain fell in the district over the last two days according to the MNRF, and daytime highs are climbing to the mid-teens. The ministry says that means the rain and snowmelt could end in high water levels and localised flooding in low-lying areas.
