Turtle walk in Haliburton is a go

A fundraising and awareness walk for turtles will go ahead as planned in Haliburton. That’s according to Land Between Chief Operating Officer Leora Berman, who says the walk was in danger of being canceled if there were under 40 registrants. Berman says many children will be participating in the walk.

The walk will start at the football field of Haliburton Highlands Secondary School on June 2nd at 10:00 a.m.

The Land Between is looking after the bio-region between the Ottawa Valley all the way to the Georgian Bay region, which Berman says is home to a third of Ontario’s turtle population. She adds aside from raising money for the Turtle Trauma Centre in Peterborough, which rehabs injured turtles. Aside from raising funds, Berman adds the walk is also meant to bring awareness to the plight of the reptiles.

Berman is encouraging anyone taking part in the walk to wear a turtle costume or make a sign and adds that it will happen whether it rains or shines.
