Dorset grass fire caused by campfire

Fire Chief Mike Cavanaugh is reminding citizens to use water to fully extinguish campfires after Algonquin Highlands Fire Department responded to a grass fire in Dorset.

The fire department was called to Wren Lake where they had to put out a small grass fire, caused by not properly putting out a campfire. Fire Chief Cavanaugh recommends the ‘stir, soak, and stir again’ method to put out campfires.  This method has people separating the burning logs so they are not touching, then pouring water on the fire, and finally stirring up the ashes to ensure there are no embers still burning.

If you’re planning on having a campfire any time soon, keep in mind there is still a daytime burning ban in effect for the county.
