Research group calls for more protection for ‘ancient trees’ in Algonquin Park

A group of ancient trees in Algonquin Park are at constant risk of being cut down.

Researchers with Ancient Forest Exploration and Research recently discovered trees that date back further than the oldest of municipalities in Cottage Country. According to the group the most aged of the trees discovered in September, about 408 years old, are in an area of Cayuga Lake which is unprotected from the logging industry. Trees between 145 and 295-years-old were also discovered in areas like Brain Lake Creek.

The group says about one-third of Algonquin Park’s old-growth forest is still open to the logging industry. It’s calling on the province to undertake a detailed assessment of these unprotected areas and set up protection for these ancient residents.
