Haliburton’s Curling Club is celebrating 60 years worth of comradery and partying with its annual tournament.
Coming up this weekend, the Haliburton Curling Club is hosting curlers from all over the province for an annual tournament dating back 60 years. David Moss, the organizer of this year’s Skyline Bonspiel spoke with My Haliburton Now.com and he says the annual event is an example of things to do outside of hockey.
Moss only in his third year as the organizer gathered curlers past and present to meet with the media to talk about the 60th anniversary of the curling event. Wayne Hussey, who for 25 years organized the event, says the event is very well received for the comradery and fun that goes on. Hussey and his fellow curling alumni explain that for years the tournament has doubled as a social gathering and a chance to be competitive against curlers from across the province.
Stevie Colliver, a long time curler and former staff member at the curling club, says even before he was allowed to compete in the bonspiel he has watched it, adding the event started when he was 10.
Moss says the curling community tends to operate on a quid pro quo basis, suggesting that members of the Haliburton club will go to other bonspiels and there is an expectation that other communities come to the bonspiel here. Moss explains that the event draws in curling groups from all over the province, including Lindsay, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, Sudbury and more.
The weekend event starts at 10:00am on Friday with competitors vying for one of four trophies given out on Sunday.
Aside from the Bonspiel, Moss wanted to emphasize that the curling club has almost 300 members and curling is alive and well in Haliburton County.
