Teens spotted on thin ice triggers warning from O.P.P.

The O.P.P. is reminding people of the dangers of ice following calls of teens seen on thin ice.

Reports of teenagers being seen playing on ice over a river is the reason that Bancroft O.P.P. is warning everyone the dangers of going onto ice unprepared.

According to the O.P.P. officers went to talk with the teens who were seen playing on the York River which has a fast current. The O.P.P. is urging everyone to understand and “speak up” about the dangers of going onto unknown ice.

My Haliburton Now.com spoke with Jolanta Kowalski of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry who says every person who wants to go onto the ice needs to do their research and understand the thickness before going on. Kowalski also says to look for a clear blue colour under the ice as that is when the ice is at its thickest.

“No one wants anyone to be in a dangerous situation and there are so many different factors when it comes to the thickness, and safety of ice,” says O.P.P. Constable Phillippe Regimay.
