Calls for Highlands East Fire Department up by almost 50 in 2018

Highlands East Fire Department reports the number of calls have gone up in 2018.

At the regular meeting of council earlier today, Chris Braughman the acting Fire Chief in Highlands East detailed the amount and types of calls that the fire department responded to over the calendar year.

Braughman reported that in 2018, the Fire Department had a total of 307 calls, which is 48 more than the calls in 2017. Chief Braughman explained in 2018 over half of the calls they responded to were medical related. Braughman details in his report to council that of the medical calls 24 per cent of them were accident or illness related.

The second highest number of  calls for the department was rescue calls, which was 13 per cent of the departments total calls. The department only received 12 fire calls in 2018.

According to Braughman’s report, 2018 was the highest call volume in the past four years.
