Dysart et al is trying to address the concerns of the Haliburton Curling Club.
In a letter sent to Dysart et al, the curling club raised concerns that needed to be addressed before the annual Home and Cottage Show in May. According to the letter, the curling club was asking for clarification on a number of issues including what the status of the parking lot construction will be by May, the marking of extra parking spaces for the well-attended event, whether or not the outdoor displays are allowed to use pegs in the asphalt. As well the club wanted to know how the municipality is addressing lighting concerns, the number of accessible parking spaces and an ‘eye-sore-trailer that is parked there.
Rob Camelon, the Director of Public Works, suggested to council that the municipality create a formal agreement with the curling club for the use of the parking lot. Camelon also made the suggestion that the council deny the use of stakes in the asphalt as that could create water infiltration and “alligator cracks.” both of Camelon’s suggestions were approved by council.
The only person to vote no on the resolution was Councillor for Ward Four, John Smith, who felt that the municipality should charge for the use of the parking lot. He added that he did not want the waiving of a fee for the curling club to create a precedent of organizations getting the use of municipal spaces for free.
Andrea Roberts, the Mayor of Dysart et al, noted the concerns of Smith but said the Home and Cottage Show is the club’s main fundraiser and has been going on there for 30 plus years with no fee or charge for the use of the space.
The Home and Cottage Show is expected to go from May 31st to June 2nd.
