Food banks encouraging healthy food donations

Haliburton County food banks are trying to provide their clients with healthier food choices. Robert Spurrier is the Chair of the Haliburton County Food Bank Network and he says they are asking people to donate healthy food choices. He says the easy thing to do is ask yourself if you would put the food you’re buying the food bank on your table and feed it to your children. Spurrier says some clients will come in looking for healthy choices, but they want to promote it even more to make sure everyone that’s coming in has those healthy items. Not only that, but Spurrier says it’s about the kids too. “Children need the healthiest food that we can provide for them… we have to take care of the kids first,” says Spurrier.

The following is a list of healthy food items you can donate to the food banks, as outlined by the Haliburton County Food Net.

  • Fruit – canned, jarred, individual serving cups
  • Breakfast cereal – whole grain, oatmeal
  • Vegetables – canned
  • Peanut Butter
  • Tuna, salmon, chicken or ham – canned
  • Beans (bakes, kidney, black) – canned
  • Meat stews – canned
  • 100% fruit juice
  • Whole grain crackers
  • Skim milk powder
  • Toiletries
