Places for People is shedding some light on homelessness in the area with an event happening county-wide.
The local organization dedicated to creating affordable rental housing in the county for people at risk of homelessness is planning a night to raise awareness about homelessness, and moreover the realities of being under-housed in the winter.
According to Fay Martin, a member of the Minden Hills Housing task force and Places for People, says as of now the event is being called “Sleeping in your Car”. Martin explains to My HaliburtonNow.com the idea is to have volunteers sleeping in their car in either Haliburton, Minden or Wilberforce with nothing more than access to a washroom and the appropriate security. Martin explained for some people, that is the only option when you have worn out couch surfing options. Martin says at the three sites, they are expecting some kind of programming at the event.
The goal of the event, says Martin, is not just raising awareness but also funds to help create more housing for those in need. Martin believes the event is going to happen at the beginning of March.
