Advancing the Taste of Home, HKPR announces Food Forum

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge Health Unit is promoting an event focused on economic development through food.

HKPR announced that Harvest Haliburton is hosting the Food and Agriculture Economic Development forum on March 5th from 9:00am to 3:30pm at the Minden Community Centre.

According to the health unit, this event is free and features a lunch for attendees. As well they say it gives food producers, farmers, restauranteurs, politicians, municipal staff and members of the public the chance to learn about the different agriculture projects underway in the county. HKPR says the event is designed in such a way that people can learn how to support and shape the future of agriculture in the area.

Rosie Kadwell, the event organizer and registered dietitian, says “this food forum will help identify real strategies and solutions that we can take back to our farm, restaurant, municipality or organization to ensure we are all working together to advance local food in 2019.” She also says “we’re very fortunate in Haliburton County to have a vibrant and diverse local food system that allows us to enjoy a taste of home. But like anything, there are challenges to growing our local food economy.”

Kadwell says there are lots of items on the agenda including “bite-sized” presentations on the local food system in the area, a keynote address from the Ministry of Agriculture, a free lunch, and time for action sessions that focus on specific priorities and challenges

“We encourage people to come out and participate in this important food forum,” Kadwell says.
