Algonquin Highlands beginning process to close landfill

It looks as though the Hawk Lake Waste Disposal Site is going to close.

After receiving a monitoring report from Cambium Inc. Adam Thorn, the Public Works Operations Manager, told the council that he will start looking into closing the landfill.

Although Cambium’s report did not suggest that there aren’t any pressing issues, it’s recommendation was to start the closing process, which Thorn suggested takes multiple years.

Cambium says while the township starts the closure procedure, they continue to do ground and surface water monitoring on an annual basis. As well, Cambium suggests the town conduct an extensive topographic survey to confirm how much waste is on site, and how much more the site can take.

Thorn suggested that the site has an estimated 3.2 years or 1,220 metres of waste remaining.

Council supported the idea of looking at closure options.
