Minden Draft budget has potential 6.48 per cent tax increase

Although the budget is still in draft, it is looking like taxes could be going up in Minden Hills.

During the regular council meeting, the township treasurer Laurie Blanchard gave an overview of where the budget stands. Blanchard said that without any major changes the budget would include a 6.48 per cent tax increase.

Blanchard explained that equals out to just over five dollars extra a month on a $300,000 home. Councillor Bob Carter pointed that regardless the taxes are going up, he emphasized that property tax is only going up by less than four per cent.

Another standout from the yet to be approved budget, is that the renovations to the SG Nesbitt Arena only account for 16 per cent of the increased tax levy. The biggest item leading to the bigger levy is operating the landfills to compliance.

If it does go through, Blanchard pointed out that staff are suggesting a five per cent increase in the costs attached to water and wastewater.

The budget is expected to be passed next meeting.
