Exclusion of carbon credit on tax guide an oversight, says Schmale

MP Jamie Schmale says not including the Carbon Credit in his annual guide to taxes was a mistake.

With tax season in full swing, the Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock MP Jamie Schmale is encouraging people to claim the carbon credit, even if it wasn’t in the guide he sent to all homes in his riding.

Schmale spoke with MyHaliburtonNow.com about his annual guide, and he says the omission of the credit was simply an oversight. He says “obviously we do not agree with the carbon tax in general but we do want in the riding and beyond to claim it and get as much money as they can.”

According to the multi-term MP, the tax book is created locally and eventually sent to the Canada Revenue Agency for review. He says that the CRA does not check for omissions, just that what is in it is factually correct. Schmale suggested that as soon as they were made aware the credit was not included, his office took to social media to let people know that was another option to claim while filing.

Schmale believes that his office has done everything they can for this error, “it was done accidentally,” says Schmale, who goes on to say “if you make a mistake, you face the consequences and live up to it.
