Haliburton O.P.P. want a safe long weekend

OPP is reminding motorcyclists, ATV enthusiasts and boaters to be safe as the long weekend kicks off.

Commissioner Thomas Carrique said that personal and public safety relies on everyone obeying the speed limit, driving in according to weather, road and trail conditions, and using helmets and lifejackets.

The force is highlighting the main causes of fatalities for each vehicle user. Driving too fast for the conditions and not wearing a helmet was the highest killer of motorcyclists. Of the 19 off-road fatalities last year for off-road vehicles, 10 of those did not include a helmet.

OPP also reminds boaters that wearing a life jacket decreases the chances of death significantly on the water. Of the 24 fatalities boating fatalities that were registered last year, 22 were not wearing a life jacket.

Alcohol and drug use also played a factor in accidents for both categories. 5 Motorcycle, 8 off-road and 8 boating accidents listed impairment as a factor.
