Housing Help launches 2019 Secondary-Suite Program

People looking to build a second dwelling on their property can get help making that happen.

The Kawartha Lakes Housing Help team announced that they have launched the latest iteration of the Secondary-Suite Program.

According to Housing Help, the program is designed to help homeowners build an additional dwelling on their home and create more rental housing.

Housing Help says that the secondary suite is a private, self-contained unit within an existing dwelling. A secondary suite has its own bathroom, kitchen, living and sleeping areas, but can share a number of facilities including a yard, parking area, laundry and storage space. The Secondary Suite Program’s goal is to create up to ten new units that would encompass one or two bedroom self-contained apartments in existing single or semi-detached homes within Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton for homeowners with income at or below the 60th percentile.

“The Secondary Suite Program is a great way for Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton residents to support seniors or other small households looking for housing accommodations, to increase rental housing options in the area,” said Hope Lee, Manager of Human Services-Housing. “Secondary Suite gives flexibility to residents looking to make their housing options more affordable.”

If you are going to apply for the program, all of the applications are going to be done on a first come, first serve basis. The deadline to apply is July 5.
