Hershe the Moose passes away at Haliburton Forest

A longtime resident of the Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve has passed away.

Hershe the Moose was a visitor favourite at the centre, living there for eight years.

In a statement from the reserve, it was noted that he had developed a number of health conditions recently. Despite close monitoring, it was determined he would not recover from his various ailments and was put down by vet professionals.

Hundreds of visitors to the reserve commented on its Facebook page, sharing sadness at the young moose dying.

“So sad to hear this today. My youngest grandson made a point of visiting him every visit. Whenever I went to Forest me too. He certainly educated the public well. Now he is back with his mom running free,” wrote Joan.

“We were there last September for the first time, camping at Wolf Lake,” wrote Robbie.  “Every day we rode our bikes to go see Hershe, my son couldn’t get enough of him. Even when we left we stopped one last time. He will be missed by many I’m sure.”
