County approves Official Plan amendment to allow septage spreading in Minden Hills

MINDEN HILLS, ON – The final seal of approval has been given to Thomas Contracting for the septage field.

Although Thomas’ Official Plan and zoning amendments were approved by Minden Hills, the county councillors had to vote to approve those changes, which happened earlier this week.

Thomas contracting had purchased a lot on Bobcaygeon Road and began spreading before they received notice they were not compliant. Because of that, the local company stopped spreading and began the process of getting the appropriate zoning and Official Plan designations.

Through the process, they had hosted an open house at the site and fielded any questions that neighbours might have.

Thomas explained during the open house that, in Minden, the site is ideal. They noted the depth of soil, the distance from bodies of water, and it’s proximity to the town.

A sentiment that was echoed by Minden Hills Mayor Brent Devolin at the county table. Devolin also expressed concern that if they didn’t approve the site then it would go elsewhere which would be problematic.

The multi-term mayor also explained that in a perfect world there would be a facility that could take the waste, but this is a good alternative.
