West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation wants people to know what to do when calling 911

PARRY SOUND, ON – A local health centre foundation is explaining “what you need to know” when you call 911.

The West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation recently put out a press release offering things to keep in mind if you need to call the emergency services.

The first thing is to be ready to answer where you are located, and what your phone number is. The later is so they can call you back if the phone disconnects.

In terms of giving your location, the foundation says that if you can it is best to give your full address including the town, apartment number and access code, as well as the closest intersection.

It is also important to understand that you may be asked to stay on the line while first responders make their way to you.

According to the foundation, the vast majority of 911 calls are false alarms caused by pocket dials or children playing on someone’s phone. So with that in mind, parents and guardians are encouraged to not let children play with phones. “If it has a battery, it is capable of calling 911.”

Another suggestion to make sure first responders can find you is to make sure that your house number is visible from the road and that all residents and guests are aware of the address in case they are the ones that need to call 911.

Same goes for if your property is accessible only from the water.
