Cottagers being encouraged to protect their permanent homes while away

BANCROFT, ON – With the summer in full swing, the police want people to follow some suggestions to keep your belongings safe.

The collective thought of the O.P.P. is that if you are cottaging, there are steps you can take to protect your full-time residence.

According to the police, if you are going away for an extended period of time, do not post it on social media because an opportunistic criminal will know that your home is empty.

Another suggestion is to get someone to maintain your property while you are away to give the illusion of someone being home. As well you can leave your contact info with a neighbour that you trust so they can call in an emergency.

You can also set your lights to be on a timer so it again looks like you are home.

If you’ve taken your car with you, the O.P.P. suggests asking a neighbour or whoever is watching the house to park in the driveway.

Killaloe O.P.P.’s Catherine Yarmel says these would be good rules to follow for both home and the cottage. She says to make sure all the locks on doors and windows are functioning, and take valuables to a security deposit box.
