Dog welfare on Minden agenda

An emotional resident of Minden Hills was in front of council Thursday to request changes to bylaws about dogs.

Shanna Dryburgh was in the epicentre of an animal abuse case involving a vacant neighbouring property where 14 dogs were tethered in the bush.

Ms. Dryburgh wants changes to the definition of kennel in kennel bylaw part 1, to include requirements for tethered dogs living outside. She wants the maximum number of dogs in a rural zone to be lowered from 9 to 4 and most importantly wants the zoning bylaw part 4.27.1 changed so that the warehousing of tethered dogs where there is no dwelling, utilities or water source, is deemed uninhabitable.

Council agrees these outdated bylaws need updating and they will work with the province and “will go with a higher standard if conflicted with the province”.
