Health unit advises against community transmission of COVID-19

HALIBURTON, ON-The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit (HKPR) is advising people to be careful as COVID-19 spreads among the community.

After the death of a Kawartha Lakes resident on March 22nd, the health unit discovered that the virus is able to attach itself to people even if they haven’t been travelling or have come in contact with anyone who has the virus.

Medical Officer of Health with the HKPR Dr. Lynn Noseworthy said that because of this incident, they are now aware that the virus is being passed between people in the community. “I urge everyone to take this virus seriously,” said Noseworthy.

The health unit is recommending that everyone take the appropriate measures to stop the spread like staying at home when you are sick, washing your hands frequently and thoroughly, covering up when you cough or sneeze,  and physically distance yourself from others.

Noseworthy said that everyone needs to follow these measures even if you are feeling well. “These measures can stop the spread of this virus to older adults or the more vulnerable residents in our communities.”
