Local MP Jamie Schmale tackles the issue regarding fellow conservative MP Derek Sloan’s comments questioning Canada’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tam’s loyalty to Canada.
MP Sloan, representing neighbouring riding, Hastings-Lennox and Addington, made the controversial comment on Twitter last week, wondering if Dr. Theresa Tam worked for the Chinese government.
MP Schmale says while he can’t defend Sloans actions, he understands the underlying issue. MP Schmale says he was a little frustrated with Derek Sloan’s answer, and he isn’t trying to put words in Derek’s mouth, he says he clearly crossed the line. He said Sloan’s comments should have been more focussed.
Schmale thinks we all have concerns about how the WHO has handled the situation. Schmale says WHO took the information from China as golden, as 100% true, which we found out after the fact was not true but was leading the countries around the world on how they dealt with this crisis. He says advice that was given out around the world did not have the correct information about how many people were infected, how many people were dead.
Schmale says regardless what questions he has, he has no doubt Dr. Tam is loyal to Canada.
He says while Dr. Tam’s loyalty to Canada should not be questioned, Canadians do have many legitimate questions with how the World Health Organization was working with China, and the information and advise that was given around the world, in many cases, led to a longer spread of this virus.
