Provinces have jurisdiction over how they will open

Prime Minister Trudeau announced that the rules for opening up the country is going to take a collective agreement between the provinces and the feds.

MP Jamies Schmale says the provinces should have jurisdiction over how they will open, and the federal government should not be telling the provinces what to do in these circumstances.

Schmale agrees that if they want to come together and share information they should, but it is definitely up to the provinces as to how quickly and how carefully they open. He says their citizens will hold them to account for whatever path they take.

Schmale points out that although Ontario released their plan on Monday, they don’t have firm timelines on how they plan to open, or what staggering effect they’re going to have. He says Saskatchewan has timelines as to what businesses would be allowed to open when, and then what the effect would be if they had more cases of COVID-19 flare up.

He says the rules to open up the country need to be addressed across the country, but provinces need to have their own plan for how and when.
