Algonquin Highlands are ready to update their fireworks policy, starting with removing it from the noise by-law.
This year the township has received a record number of complaints about fireworks, including about people discharging them during the total fire ban.
Council agreed a fireworks by-law needs to be created that includes a total ban on floating lanterns.
Staff were directed to draft a new by-law similar to other municipalities in the county.
Algonquin Highlands Mayor Carol Moffatt said that although other municipalities are also receiving a lot of complaints about fireworks,” the community is changing and they need to be resilient and budget for enforcement and staffing. Public education and awareness is key, and a good investment”.
