Province hands out funding to improve municipal public transportation

Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock MPP Laurie Scott announced Thursday that part of the $375 million in gas tax funding will be handed out in her riding.

The Municipality of Dysart et all will get $24,619 to improve its local transit system, while the City of Kawartha Lakes will $640,774.

“The gas tax program continues to provide reliable financial support to our municipal partners in (the riding),” Scott said. “These funds contribute to important improvements and maintenance for local transit systems and help residents as they access essential goods and services in their communities.”

Scott explained that funding for the gas tax program comes from the number of litres sold in the province in the last 12 months. Of that, municipalities supporting public transit services get two cents per litre of provincial gas tax revenue collected to be used to extend service hours, buy transit vehicles, add routes, improve accessibility or upgrade infrastructure.

On top of the two local towns, 107 other municipalities in Ontario will receive part of the funding. Peterborough County and Durham Region will also receive support.
