Pair arrested after string of copper thefts

After managing to escape the law twice, the pair accused of stealing copper from Hydro One substations in Minden Hills Township have been arrested by Haliburton Highlands OPP.

The string of thefts started on August 25th and over the next two weeks, three separate incidents of copper wire being stolen happened. The stolen wire is estimated to be worth around $7,000.

On September 14th, the Central Region OPP’s Media Relations Officer Gosia Puzio says officers found the vehicle suspected to be driven by the alleged wire thieves. It was found in a parking lot in the township where the thefts happened. Police attempted to take a 25-year-old man from Gatineau, Quebec into custody, but escaped after a short chase that was called off for safety reasons.

On the 26th, the male and a 21-year-old female with no fixed address were allegedly trespassing on a property in Minden when officers were called to the scene. The two were in a vehicle when officers arrived and, again, fled at a high rate of speed when the police arrived. Puzio says a police cruiser was struck as the pair escaped. The police didn’t chase them because of concerns for public safety.

Two days later, the two were arrested without any further problems in Sault Ste. Marie with help from the area’s police service.

The male has been charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer, two counts of dangerous operation, two counts of failure to stop after an accident, obstruct peace officer, two counts of mischief endangering life, and three counts of breaking and entering. The female has been charged with assaulting a peace officer, flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation, failure to stop after an accident, and mischief endangering life.

Both are being held pending their bail hearings.
