HKPRDHU encouraging residents to get flu shot

The local health unit is encouraging the community to get vaccinated for the flu.

Influenza season is on the horizon, says the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit (HKPRDHU).

“The flu vaccine is safe, effective and your best defence against influenza,” says Dr. Natalie Bocking, Medical Officer of Health with the HKPR District Health Unit in a press release. “Getting the flu vaccine will also help prevent unnecessary hospital visits and reduce the strain on our health care system which continues to deal with the impact of COVID-19.”

Bocking adds that it’s safe to get the flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine at the same time, and encourages people who haven’t been vaccinated against COVID-19 to get both shots while you’re there.

To stop the spread of influenza, the health unit recommends hand-washing, coughing and sneezing into your sleeve, and staying home while sick, as well as keeping your immune system strong by eating well, getting enough sleep, and staying physically active.

According to the health unit, flu shots can be given to anyone aged two and up, with pharmacies, health care providers, and the health unit itself offering the jab. For a full list, visit the HKPRDHU’s website at www.hkpr.on.ca.
