McPhail Road to be reconstructed in summer

The road leading to Algonquin Highlands’ Maple Lake Landfill will be fixed, but for now the township is asking for patience.

McPhail Rd. has been the subject of some debate in the community, with potholes and other issues making it a bumpy drive to the dump site.

“There’s been lots of work done to [McPhail] to try and keep it in as good shape as we possibly can,” says Algonquin Highlands Mayor Liz Danielsen. “Right now, when you’re getting into frost and thaw, the roads all start to crater a little bit. But you can’t do anything about it, really, until things thaw out a little bit more.”

Danielsen says the road is scheduled for reconstruction in the summer. In the meantime, it’s just a matter of keeping the surface operational.

“That particular stretch of road, it’s a nasty spot right now, there’s no doubt about it,” says Danielsen. “But there’s been a considerable amount of work done to that area. It just happens to be in a low-lying, kind of swampy area.”
