Local Lions Club Holding Guides Dog Fundraiser

The Haliburton and District Lions Club is once again raising money through its Walk for Guide Dogs Fundraiser on May 20.

Lions Club member Gail Stelter says it is a Canada-wide event and every club across the country works with the Lions Foundation of Canada to help people who need guide dogs get them.

“The cost is phenomenal. So we are all asked to do something to help,” says Stelter, adding people don’t realize the different kind of guide dogs needed. “There are the hearing dogs, seizure response dogs, service dogs that help people with physical and medical disabilities, autism assistance dogs, diabetic alert guide dogs, facility support and canine vision dogs for the blind and visually impaired.”

The event kicks off at 8 a.m. at the Haliburton Pet Value with yard, book, plant, and bake sales with registration for the walk beginning at 11:30. Anyone interested in collecting pledges can get a form at the store or on the Lions Club website. Last year’s event raised over $3,000.

The Haliburton Camera Club will also be on hand to take pictures of dog owners with their pets. The Club is also holding a Mother’s Day Food Bank Fill-Up. Members will be collecting non-perishable food items at the Haliburton and Wilberforce Foodland locations On Saturday, May 13.
