Minden Pride readying for its eighth year

Minden Pride is gearing up for its eighth annual Pride Week starting today and running until August 27. The festivities start today at 11 a.m. at the Minden Municipal Office parking lot for a flag raising.

Executive Director Dan Guinan says some things stay the same while others are brand new. “Every year we have some traditional events like our Queer Trivia Night, which everyone likes. We also have our flag-raising ceremony on Sunday and in alliance with the Haliburton Library, Drag Queen story time.” He adds a comedy night is also on the list of events along with a Diva Dance Party and a street festival in Minden where vendors will be set up. There are also a number of family events such as the Youth Hub which is a local support centre and hip-hop dance.

Guinan says he’s looking forward to having large crowds at all their events. “Things are ramping up in terms of ticket sales, which we always use as a gauge. We are going to have a good turnout. It’s been our eighth year and it has turned into one of the largest cultural festivals in the county and we are really looking forward to seeing a good turnout again this year.”

There have been a number of protests across the province during pride ceremonies, particularly involving Drag Queen Story Times. Guinan says the possibility is something on his mind. “I think we are always concerned. We always want our festival to be a very positive experience within the LGBTQ+ community and we do have preparations in place, but we have always had a warm welcome and reception in Haliburton Highlands.”

Information on all the events is available at www.mindenpride.ca where tickets can also be purchased.
