After a combined 24 hours on air, 93.5 Moose FM Haliburton’s annual Christmas Radiothon raised $58,374 for county food banks.
The money will be split proportionately between the food banks in Minden, Haliburton, Wilberforce, and Cardiff.
Jean Munroe, Manager of the Minden Community Food Centre, says that money will make all the difference for their clients.
“That’s going to make a huge impact,” says Munroe. “We’re expecting 2024 [food prices] not to be any better, maybe worse than 2023, so that’s going to really help us a lot, all the food banks in the county.”
According to Munroe, the money will go towards buying food for their clients and help out with regional Christmas hamper programs. She notes that between last year and this year, there’s been a 45 to 50 per cent increase in people using food bank services locally. “Just the other day, I took in eight new families—that is the first time I think I ever did that many in one afternoon,” she says.
Munroe and officials from the three other food banks are thanking the community, volunteers, sponsors, and staff at Moose FM for their support.
“I would like to say a big thank you from all of us, myself, all the other food banks,” says Munroe. “We’re so happy that we have donors. This community is so generous, and it’s just great to see. I’m really excited. Thank you all very much.”
